PLAYOFFS AND END OF THE SEASON

BARON OFFERS SOME TOURNAMENTS!

I can remember the opening of the indoor BFL season like is was yesterday.

Warm day in October...
Guys getting set up for the first Baron's Cup.

There was a huge learning curve for me, and the lads that first day.

But the guys began to understand that the BFL is not a normal REC league.

Other leagues will offer a simple round robin and playoff approach.

The BFL offers entertainment.
Fun
Excitement.

We strive for balanced teams...which I understand is now being implemented in other leagues.

But we also offer tournaments to shake things up a bit.

The Baron's Cup...where we have a draft and mix up the players.
This ensures that the guys meet others and start a long last sports friendship.

The BFL Royal Rumble starts this month.
In an experimental stage, it offers high flying competition.
And winning on the field isn't the only way to score points.
Being skilled and having sportsmanship also yields points.

We will also showcase the 10 v 10 Grapevine Tournament.
This matches teams of their ability, and future rules will ensure parity.

I'm proud of my players.
It was, for the most part, a really good season.
The future will see us learn, adapt and overcome!

SEASON ENDS MARCH 31st

BFL IS WINDING DOWN

Greetings BFL'ers,

A few of you emailed me last week detailing some issues with the schedule.

After taking a closer look, you were correct to alerting me to some possible issues.

I have taken the steps to change the schedule so that they offer a more fair chance for teams to make the finals.

Going forward, I have seen the importance of allowing the rounds to fully continue.

We will also be including the playoffs as part of the schedule, just to let people know how to plan their year.

It's this constant improving of the BFL that's so important to maintain.
And I look to the players to continue to offer support and ideas for that reason.

BARON's CUP ACTION RESUMES!

VAUNTED TOURNAMENT IS NOW A MAINSTAY FOR THE BFL!

BFL'ers!

Baron here...on the computer and not yet on the pitch!

Just watching the rain come down...slowly erasing the proudest moments of this winter.

Baron's Cup is today...and I'm excited.

We've tweaked the tournament a bit, experimenting with what can be done.
And I'm pleased with the success.

Some players may not like the Baron's Cup.
It involves taking people from their team and placing them into new teams.
New players.
New skills.

I can understand the apprehension.

But this is done for a reason.

Next year, the Baron's Cup teams will be chosen in a draft made by the Captains.
The teams will remain the same throughout the years.
Trades will be permitted, with vetoes from the other teams if required.

The Baron's Cup also changes things up.
It allows people to play with other players, and avoids that antagonism inherent in games.

It will continue to evolve, no doubt.
Plans are to have goal scorers records.
And have the best player of the game chosen.
But these will come later, as we become comfortable with the league.

For now, let's see if we get any surprises tonight!

THINGS GET CLOSER IN THE BFL

WAS LAST WEEKEND A TURNING POINT FOR THE SEASON?

Hello Readers!

Last weekend, yours truly donned the mantle of the Oshawa City Lokomotive and took part in their game against vaunted Sporting Port Perry.

This wasn't the first time I had been on the pitch this season.
But it was the first time that I made a decision to play for a certain team.
Usually I keep myself open for whatever team needs me.

It was extremely fun getting my stride in, and using my tactical ability to show the rest of the league that this aging super star from yesteryear has it still.

What impressed me the most was the fact that the games were extremely close affairs.

Lokomotive led the entire game, but it could easily have been Sporting!

Nate H, one of our new recruits from Summer, really showed why he can be one of the top players in this league.
His superior control of the mid field really broke the Red's attacks and allowed simple, yet effected counters.
Of course, it always helps to have Leigh between the sticks!

On the other game, Whitby came out like Lions and stuck it to the current league leaders Bowmanville.
Leading well into the last half, Bowmanville had to rely on a few lucky situations, and their star Keeper John G.

Both games were well fought, and didn't have the unnecessary garbage of cards.

I'd love to see more of these games where the scores are within one or two goals.
That's what makes the BFL part of the beautiful game!

A CHANGE IN THE WEATHER

BARON TALKS SUMMER SOCCER

Good Morning Readers!

Just looking outside today...seeing the melt and the ponds forming in my backyard. Reminds me that summer is going to come shortly!

This year, the Oshawa Kicks has made the BFL part of their offerings.

IT's 7 v 7, on a 9 v 9 field.
This gives lots of room to race, exploit mistakes and have a lot of fun.

We will attempt to balance the teams more stringently this season.
Last summer, Oshawa City Lokomotive was the team without much challenge.
In the winter, Dynamo Bowmanville S.C. are in the same boat.

While it's great to play with friends, the fact is that the BFL was founded on the principle of each team having a realistic chance at actually taking the Cup.

It's a long road and process to get to that point.
A lot of minds need to change.

I ran a league decades ago where the teams were selected on who showed up and we played for 90 minutes, adjusting the teams to ensure that the games were close.

I'm sure that, as men, we can do without our security blankets for an hour.

And after the summer games, we usually plan BBQ's for the guys and their families.
At one point we had over 100 people crowded around a small portable BBQ.

Everyone had a good time.
And that's what the BFL is all about...getting a good time in with people who share a love for the beautiful game.

Happy Family Day Readers!

BARON FOOTBALL LEAGUE CONTINUES...

So, here we are, on the eve of one of the greatest days to get together with family.

I can remember when there were no holidays in February.
It was about time that little oversight was corrected.

Losing sight of why we're here...

Over the past few weeks, I've been noticing a trend that I'd like to stop.

Instead of getting competitive, we're getting lazy.
And this lazy is getting us into trouble.

Baron, what are you talking about?

I'm talking about the raw and stupid pseudo violence against our BFL brethren.

Accidents happen.
I'll step on somebody's foot, attempting to grab the ball.
I may overstep my bounds and kick someone by accident.

This is when I, as a man, need to acknowledge I made a mistake.
As a responsible male, I need to take ownership of this.

A simple apology goes a long way.
Helping someone up.
Telling them "hey, I f*cked up, I'm sorry"
Yeah, they may be angry.
So would you.
But at the very least, you proved that you are better.

And that's what this league is all about.
Becoming better in all aspects of life.
And moving forward to enjoy the beautiful game.

THE ROAD TO THE BARON's CUP

BARON TAKES TIME TO ANSWER MAIL

Salutations Sports Watchers!

Running a league can be serious business.
And performing your duties while being sick is a chore.

One of the pleasures I get from running this league is seeing people who could normally not play, enjoying the beautiful game.
The trophies and accolades are just a side venue to put more entertainment into the BFL.

I also love the Fan mail that comes in.
Here are some of the letters from you, the Fans, that will be answered.

LETTER ONE:
Why do you hate REP teams playing in REC leagues?

It's not the teams I hate.
It's the idea that REP teams that can't handle their leagues, need to push out guys who just want to run about, have some fun and socialize with other men.
I've been on REC teams that get demolished 11 - nil. It's not fun. It's not productive. And it has the effect of turning people off to a game that should be enjoyed.
The BFL is based upon getting anyone into the field again, and playing on balanced teams. Sure, sometimes there's a blow out, but for the most part, the games are competitive and fun!

LETTER TWO:
I don't understand why you have a Baron's Cup Tournament and mix up all the players.

This was a difficult idea for me as well.
But I've run the Baron's Cup for over a decade.
The guys, for the most part, get a kick out of new teams and playing a "C" level game.
It also has the effect of getting players to know their rivals, competitors and gaming friends.
When we get to that level of social interaction, it makes cheap shots and stupidity LESS likely.

LETTER THREE:
What do you see the BFL doing in future seasons?

I hope to see the BFL continue to expand and help men back into the game.

I have experimented with the Baron's Cup, and it will continue to evolve.

In the future, I have as my targets:
An All-Star Game
Grape Vine Tournament
Relegation league
Continued Sports Experimentation for games.

Well, that's it for now...more letters for the future my friends!

POST CHRISTMAS -- POST NEW YEAR's

THE BFL RESUMES AFTER A THREE WEEK BREAK!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the Fans, Friends and Families out there.

The Blog is usually a lot more lively during the Festive Season, but yours truly was battling sickness and a way too busy schedule!

In honour of our motto: Learn, Adapt, Overcome, the Baron will be doing more time off this coming Christmas season!

And back to the Baron Football League!

I'm sitting here in my office, just looking out at the -25 Celsius weather. Coldest day of the year, and we're supposed to get some snow. It's just coming down now.

Typically we "enjoy" our worst weather at this time, and for the next six weeks. But by March, the weather is really broken, and we head off into the summer months fairly quickly.

For the BFL, March will feature some "madness".
Stay tuned for that sports fans!

It was good to get back on the pitch.
Dynamo Bowmanville S.C. had a roster issue, and were sporting five men against an energized Energie Whitby F.C. team.
Whitby was missing many of their top Golden Pear men, but the Greens were without the two top Golden Pear men of the league!

I was able to stretch my legs after getting doctor approval.
The injuries from the summer have slowly healed.
And I was happy to have an impact on the field.
Once Bowmanville got to six men, the tide turned.
Was it the power of the Baron, or simply a team effort....who's to say? :)

I also enjoyed seeing Saul return to his form.
Such a classy and amazing individual!
He's now hungry for a three peat, and has a nifty new jersey to help him along.

Let's see how things go this weekend fans!
Be sure to join us for the games.

Baron Football League

CAPTAINS...BE PREPARED FOR THE PRE GAME

Greetings Players and Fans!

Just a quick one today.
Not a lot of time for the Blog this week.

Lots of things going on.

We are heading into the Christmas Break with Bowmanville in solid first place.

It's been a while since we've been able to say that one!

This is Bowmanville's third season, and they're firing on all cylinders.
Despite some epic competitors, the Greens are undefeated and look like the favourites to win the BFL.

Oshawa City, on the other hand, is having a really bad start.
After four Cup wins, they look towards being shut out completely.

The moral of this story is that you should never take immeasurable skill lightly.

Football is a team game, and the best team will find ways to win despite vulnerabilities.

There's always time for a turn around.
Can the Greens find themselves in the bottom in the New Year?
Can the Blacks climb back up and show the world why they are the Four Time Champions?

Let's wait and see.

BARON'S CUP STARTS OFF WITH A BANG

ONE OF THE GREATEST TOURNAMENTS IN THE WORLD BEGINS!!!

Good Evening Sports Followers!

Well, it's Evening somewhere in the world, maybe even here.

The onset of unseasonably cold weather may put a freeze on the activities outside, but inside the Civic Auditorium, things are crazy hot.

I'm, of course, referring to the Baron's Cup Tournament.

I received an email the other day from one of my guys, indicating that we should change it up a bit.
Why not? I asked myself. Great suggestion.

So...

We picked teams, and I tried to keep them equal.
Well, strike one for Baron.
Had to change some players around.
Ah yes...not too bad.

As you'll see from our Facebook page, the games were very close, and the teams are closely spaced in the rankings.

Did I say TEAMS?

Yes!

The Baron's Cup is now going to be a Tournament with constant players.
It's still going to be players from different teams...this is a standard in my Tournament.
But I think it'll be better...the guys will get to know each other.
And this creates a friendly environment so that our league thrives.

How will the rest of the Tournament go?
Stay Tuned my friends!

WEEK FIVE: COMES AND GOES

Salutations Baron Football League Supporters!

It's the Saturday before the Baron's Tournament, and I'm stoked

We just set new chill records for the area on Thursday, but our lads are always heating up the level of competition!

In our "C" League, why keep track of Standings and Scores and Individual efforts?

It's important for the men of the BFL to have a bit of fun.
What better than emulate the professional leagues in their scoring challenges?

In the past the guys have had a lot of fun going after these titles.
They know that if they score or assist they get points.
They know that play is rewarded through the Man of the Match.
If they don't win that, they could win the Honourable Mention.
Keepers get in on it as well.
So any position, any player could lead the pack.

From last week we found that the action is pretty competitive.
Lokomotive is adjusting their team, and looking to put a new player or two in the roster.

The surprise of the first complete Round is that Dynamo Bowmanville S.C. is currently undefeated.
Congratulations to them and their efforts.

I can't wait to see Round Two!

WEEK FOUR: BARON FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The Story so Far...

Greetings True Believers!

The death of Stan Lee, the great comic book creator, is a loss that may not affect everyone, but it should.

He has created an entire culture, a separate entity that spans the globe. From small beginnings, he rose up and his vision took hold.

His legacy will not soon be forgotten.

To Stan Lee, wherever he may reside, I say Thank you.

I also want to take the time to thank our Veterans for their sacrifices in the line of duty.

Happy Remembrance Day to those who serve our nation.

We all owe a lot to them, wherever they may be!
THANK YOU!

Moving forward to the BFL...

Some interesting results on Sunday, to say the least.

Emerging are two teams in particular interest.

Dynamo Bowmanville S.C. seems almost invincible these days.
Led by their Captain Brandon, they are a total team, with lots of firepower.

Sporting Port Perry is our expansion team, and showing each game that they are a force with which to be reckoned.
There isn't a set team on this side, which makes covering them all that more difficult.

Now the two smash together this Sunday.

My prediction: a draw, just to annoy the Fans.

Have a great week!
Baron

WEEK THREE HAS COME AND GONE...

Hey Football Followers!

Baron here...

Some exciting playing this year.
I'm really happy with the fact that most of the games are close.
We've had two ties this season, which is more than the other seasons.
The method is working.

But is it?

The Champions have yet to win a game.
Is it due to a lack of a seasoned Keeper?
Is it due to people not showing up?
Is it...
Is it...

One of the most important aspects of the Baron Football League is the fact that we play competitive football at a recreational level.

Some of us have played pro, semi pro, REP, etc...but the teams are REC level.

And I keep them balanced so that no matter your skill, you'll have fun.

There may be some tough choices to come in the following weeks.

But I think that we'll find our true groove eventually.

And I look upon my fellow BFL'ers to work towards this goal.
After all, what's the point if every game isn't exciting and prone to a nail biting finish?

THE MOST EXCITING GAME THERE IS...

Good Morning Sports Fans!
Baron here!

Just finished a Toaster Strudel, some veggies and a mix of protein from what was left in the fridge.
Tastes just right...and keeps me from dipping into the Halloween Loot my kids earned.

A few things I want to say.

First:
It's great to see the BFL take off with so much energy and excitement.
The guys are pumped, and it shows on the field.
I'm seeing tonnes of amazingly good (and sometimes bad) plays.

Second:
Remember that this is a "C" League.
That doesn't mean that we "dumb" down our skills.
It just means that SAFETY takes precedence of scoring that goal or getting that loose ball.
Guys...remember that injuries hurt in the short and long term.

What I like to see is true "shoulder to shoulder" action.
No cheap shots...even when the Official is obviously NOT looking.

Third:
And if the Official gets the call wrong, please (PLEASE) be honest.
So if the ball came off you and off the touchline, give it to your opponent.
If the goal went in, and you KNOW it went in, concede.

This is called SPORTSMANSHIP.
And like it says in your Player's Handbook, that's what we build teams upon.

Why?
Because if you're not honest, and playing with honour, this creates a toxic atmosphere.

Would you play a game with your young kids and cheat on them just to win?
I hope not.
Because that sends a bad message...that we will win at any cost.

I recently Officiated a game that would decide the playoffs.
The White team scored, and with five minutes to play, clinched their spot.
The White Coach came on field and told me that he had too many men on the field.
He didn't have to tell me...he could have been silent and taken the win.
But he had honour, and his team learned something important.

You may disagree, but I hope you don't.
Because reputation is all important.

Baron

BARON's FOOTBALL LEAGUE RESUMES 2018-19

Hey there Sports Fans!

Baron is sitting here, typing stuff out and revamping the Blog site.
Sometimes I wonder if the Blog serves a purpose...and just when I think I should delete it, the Golden Pear winner from last year FaceBook's me.

Now Saul is a tremendous asset to the world of local soccer. I have seen this guy give his time and blood to teaching the new, the experienced and the old. He works tirelessly with his friends to produce teams of excellent calibre.

He's also quite a character on the pitch, and isn't afraid to ask the tough questions.

"Baron, we need to know the Golden Pear COMPLETE standings," he messages me.

Here I am, working on this stuff, and Saul settles my decision.
The Blog that I have maintained for over a decade will remain.
We'll just tweak a little here, and a little there.

I hope that you guys approve of the changes!

MOVING ON FROM SUMMER TO WINTER

BARON FOOTBALL LEAGUE CONTINUES TO RECRUIT!

Baron Says...

It's been a great summer of soccer this year.

The BFL is going strong, although there were a few things that seemed to interfere with operations of  how I wanted this league to run.

First and foremost was the continuing lack of guys showing up.

Understandably, it's summer, and we'll miss games due to going out with the family and friends.

Injuries take a toll on the body as well, and I am very sympathetic to that reason!

But there are more than a few guys who are consistently not showing up.
Whereas we had many full teams in June, the counts for some of the teams have gone down.

And that's a shame, considering that new player signings are not keeping up with the old players just not showing up.

What this also does is stop me from making the teams more even.
If I know I can count on nine or ten guys a week to show up, then I can move bodies around to make the games more equal.

Oshawa City Lokomotive and Dynamo Bowmanville S.C. are teams that continuously bring men to the field and the results show it.

You can't win games by plugging new guys into teams every week, only to find that they're on a different team the week after.

So, if you can make the games...please don't let your team down.
It affects a lot more than your team.

OSHAWA CITY REIGNS SUPREME

GAME WITH COURTICE SETTLED BY ONE GOAL

RECAP:

OSHAWA CITY vs COURTICE

The battle of the Round Two giants began with Lokomotive fielding just enough players to avoid being defaulted.

Action was non stop from end to end...with each team seeing posts and crossbars.

A brilliant goal by the "dream team" of Curtis and Brad in the second half seemed to light a fire under the league leaders.

But Courtice held strong, kept in check by the wily veteran Keeper Trevor.

On the last play of the game, Captain Anders led a charge, only to come up empty.

The entire game was settled by one goal, to Oshawa.

BOWMANVILLE vs WHITBY

The lads from Whitby seemed a bit deflated without their Captain, who is currently undergoing surgery to repair a tore muscle.

Physicians for Whitby tell us that Captain Robb could be out for almost three weeks!

But the game was virtually even throughout most of the game.

In the last ten minutes, though, Bowmanville, who needed the points to stay in pace with Oshawa, broke it open.

Video Assisted Replay was consulted on the two Green goals, which were allowed by the Official upon closer examination of the evidence.

This game ended 4-2.

COURTICE KEEPS GOING STRONG

OSHAWA AND COURTICE UNBEATEN IN ROUND TWO!

Baron's Football League Update:

Some great games last weekend.
I am continuously impressed by the guys on the pitch!

OSHAWA vs BOWMANVILLE

Here's a classic confrontation between two teams who know each other real well!

The action was tight, and by the end of the first half, there was no real winner in sight.

The second half proved to be the doom of the Greens, though, as they lacked enough subs to continue at their pace.

Lokomotive used their substitutes to wear down their opponents and slip ahead by a goal.
Their second came as Dynamo attempted to tie the game down on a last minute play.

COURTICE vs WHITBY

With their win last week, the lads from Courtice were read to do it again.

Both sides drew many chances in the first half.
Whitby seemed to have the better, with a few going off the uprights!

But scoring didn't start until the second half of the second half.

Courtice broke away and pocketed a nifty shot.
Whitby came back right after the whistle, and tied it up.

It wasn't until the very last play of the game that Courtice went ahead to stay.

COURTICE ASC WINS FIRST MATCH!

TEAM LOOKED SHARP IN SECOND ROUND DEBUT!

Things certainly changed from the start of Round One.

OSHAWA VS WHITBY
Missing a few of their players, Whitby often struggled to wrest control from Lokomotive on the pitch.

There were a few moments of sheer brilliance, though, but the men in Black didn't allow any capitalizations on their mistakes.

Oshawa led the luck category, scoring goals when they really shouldn't have.

But the mid field was all Lokomotive, and with a good amount of subs, shut down Whitby completely, giving Darren a clean sheet.

COURTICE ASC VS BOWMANVILLE
Over the week, a new mid fielder was signed to Courtice, which seemed to energize the lads.

They scored two in the first few minutes, and Green struggled to regain some initiative.

Tray, Stephen and Devon were solid in the offensive mid, stopping concerted plays from Bowmanville.

A late goal by Dynamo stepped up the tempo of the match, but Courtice held on for their first win of the year.

Captain Ander's wife was so shocked at the result, that she went into labour.
Everyone from the Baron's Football League wishes both parents and child all the best in this time of great joy!

ROUND TWO OF THE LEAGUE STARTS

NEW PLAYERS JOIN AN ALREADY STELLAR CAST!

Round two of the League starts after a Canada Day hiatus.

During the holiday break, Baron was able to secure new prospects which will be delivered to the teams this weekend.

"I'm very excited that the league is getting new blood" said Baron, " and I hope that this leads to new teams!"
